In the past few years, Latvian courts have considered several criminal cases of espionage for Russia or Belarus.
A court in Riga sentenced a 72-year-old Russian citizen, who was found guilty of espionage and possession of explosives, to eight years in prison. Current Time wrote this on Wednesday, January 15, citing the Latvian agency LETA.
The man’s name was not given. The agency called him a former Soviet officer who, after leaving the armed forces of the USSR, stayed to live in Latvia.
According to the prosecution, the Russians collected publicly available information about political processes in Latvia, critical infrastructure and military facilities around the Riga airport, including tracking the location of the 17th battalion of the Latvian National Guard .
For a long time, the man passed the information received to a representative of Russian intelligence in personal meetings in Kaliningrad, the prosecutor’s office said.
During a search of his garage, security forces found 136 rounds of ammunition, one RDX briquette weighing 975 grams and four TNT briquettes weighing about 760 grams.
We remind you that unknown drones began to be noticed at the Ramstein airbase in Germany. Police believe these are Russian reconnaissance drones.
