Russia’s conditions also provide for maintaining at least effective control over nearly 20% of the Russian Federation’s possessions in Ukraine, including the Crimean Peninsula.
In upcoming talks with newly elected US President Donald Trump, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin will demand that Ukraine not join NATO. Bloomberg reported this citing sources.
It is noted that the Kremlin defends the position that even if individual NATO members continue to supply weapons to Ukraine in accordance with bilateral security agreements, any such weapons should not be used either to return captives that territory or to attack Russia itself.
As the publication writes, the Ukrainian leadership will almost certainly not like such strict demands, as the duration of the war is approaching three years. However, the Russian dictator’s position also contradicts Trump’s stated desire to end the conflict as soon as possible and may include giving Moscow leeway regarding negotiations.
At the same time, Bloomberg said that the Russian conquests in eastern Ukraine were carried out slowly and achieved by the Russian Federation at great cost.
The anonymous source said Russia’s terms also include maintaining at least de facto control over about 20% of Russian possessions in Ukraine, including the Crimean peninsula that was annexed in 2014, but open Moscow in some territorial swaps, he said.
It was previously reported that Trump’s entourage was hoping for a conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin “in the coming days or weeks.” Preparations for their meeting are also currently underway.
