Canberra’s next steps will depend on the outcome of the investigation into the Australian citizen situation.
The Australian government is ready to expel the Russian ambassador if reports of the Russian military killing of its citizen Oscar Jenkins, who fought on the side of Ukraine and was captured by the Russians at the end of the year, are confirmed. This is what Prime Minister Anthony Albanisi said.
“We are seriously concerned and call on Russia to immediately provide all information about Oscar Jenkins and confirm his status,” the official insisted.
Albanisi emphasized that Canberra’s next steps will depend on the outcome of the investigation into the situation regarding the Australian citizen. The Russian ambassador was summoned to the Australian Foreign Ministry.
Oscar Jenkins, a 32-year-old teacher from Melbourne, fought for Ukraine and was captured by the Russian military in late December, after which videos of his brutal interrogation began to circulate on social media channels. pro-Kremlin Telegram, showing a Russian soldier repeatedly beating the Australian whose name and citizenship have been confirmed, swearing and mocking him. At one point, the Russian asked the prisoner “does he want to live?” Jenkins replied: “I want to help Ukraine.”
In early January, information appeared in the media about the killing of an Australian volunteer by the Russian military, which caused a wave of anger in Australia and a strong reaction from the country’s government.
The opposition has called on Albanisi to cut diplomatic ties with Russia if Jenkins’ death is confirmed.
We remind you that Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong announced the provision of new aid packages to Ukraine. Funds will be transferred to restore and support the energy sector.
