The protesters demanded the resignation of the current president and the re-run of the election starting from the second round.
In the capital of Romania, Bucharest, on Sunday, January 12, a protest rally of thousands took place against the cancellation of the results of the presidential elections, reports the Romanian edition of Radio Liberty.
The initiator of the action was the Alliance for the Unification of Romanians (AUR) party.
The protesters demanded to reverse the decision of the Constitutional Court to annul the results of the presidential elections and to extend the powers of President Klaus Iohannis.
Demonstrators chanted “Johanness, resign!”, “Second round, go away!” and “Freedom! Freedom!” Correspondents reported that more than 12 thousand people came out to protest.
Columns of demonstrators were accompanied by police and gendarmerie forces. No serious incidents were reported during the rally, which lasted more than 10 hours. Many people were injured.
Let’s recall that in Romania, the pro-Russian far-right politician Calin Georgescu won the presidential election in the first round.
The Romanian Constitutional Court annulled the results of the first round of the presidential election. The reason for the cancellation of the results is the intervention of the Russian Federation and cyber attacks. Now the country must call new elections. Repeated presidential elections will take place in the second half of May.
