Polish presidential candidate from the opposition Law and Justice party, Karol Nawrocki, spoke out against inviting Ukraine to the EU and NATO because of the conflict with Warsaw over the Volyn tragedy.
Today I do not see Ukraine in any structure. Neither in the European Union, nor in NATO. A state that cannot answer for a too brutal crime against 120 thousand of its neighbors cannot be part of international unions.
As president, I will tell them that we would like our efforts to be treated as partners on the Ukrainian side,” Nawrocki, who now heads the Polish Institute of National Remembrance, said in an interview with Polsat News.
In addition, Nawrocki used to call Galicia “eastern Lesser Poland”.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry responded to the statement of the Polish presidential candidate.
We reject these tendentious and manipulative statements. Such statements indicate that the Polish politician puts opportunistic considerations above the strategic interests of the country’s security, good neighborly Ukrainian-Polish relations, and the common values of freedom, democracy and justice.
A constructive dialogue between the authorized authorities on the historical past continues between the Ukrainian and Polish sides,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The department once again called on Polish politicians “not to use the topic of complex pages of the historical past in the internal political struggle.”
It is noteworthy that Mr. Navrotsky’s statements caused applause in the Kremlin. It is worth recalling that it is Russia that has been trying to destroy the Ukrainian and Polish states for centuries. It is unacceptable to make statements that play along with these enemy efforts,” the Foreign Ministry emphasized.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk also shamed the Polish opposition over Nawrocki’s statements.
So, he turned to the leader of the Law and Justice (PiS) party Jaroslaw Kaczynski, which supports Nawrocki’s statements.
Your candidate Karol Nawrocki said that he sees no place for Ukraine in NATO. Do you still remember which president supported Ukraine more on this issue? Who was most opposed? Aren’t you ashamed? – Tusk wrote on the social network X, obviously hinting that the current President of Poland Andrzej Duda belongs to the same PiS.
