Latvian Defense Minister Artis Pabriks announced on Tuesday that the Baltic nation will reintroduce compulsory military service amid rising tensions with Russia amid the war in Ukraine.
“The current military system Latvia has reached its limit. At the same time, there is no reason to think that Russia will change his behavior,” Pabriks told reporters.
Latvia he abolished the service after joining NATO. Since 2007, its armed forces have been composed of regular soldiers and National Guard volunteers.
A country of less than two million people bordering Belarus and Russiacurrently has 7,500 active soldiers and national guards supported by 1,500 NATO soldiers.
He will rule from 2023
Pabriks said conscription will take effect next year, with several possible options for meeting the requirement.
Gatis Priede, a National Guard soldier, called the move “the best news,” noting that the decision should have been made after Russia annexed Crimea in 2014.
“It is the right decision to train more reservists to strengthen our army and NATO in general, which has serious shortcomings in the Northern European and Baltic regions,” he told AFP.
Pabriks also announced plans to build another military base near the southeastern city of Jekabpils, located close to the Russian border.

He also pointed out that in the case of momo smallpox in Peru, three cases have already been identified, there is no need to worry, but it is more important to know what the Ministry of Health should do. The doctor said that people should know that there will be cases.
