The alleged perpetrator of the massacre during the celebration of the Day National Day in Highland Parka city near Chicago, was charged Tuesday with the first-degree murder of seven people and faces life in prison if convicted, a local prosecutor said.
Robert Crimo, 21, was arrested on Monday hours after he opened fire on a crowd attending a July 4th Independence Day parade, apparently at random. USA.
Charges against the suspect
“New charges will be brought against him,” Lake County State Attorney Eric Rinehart told reporters, announcing seven charges of first-degree murder.
“We expect dozens more charges against each of the victims,” Rinehart added, noting that if found guilty, Crimo faces a mandatory life sentence without parole.
According to Highland Park police officer Christopher Covelli, the suspect used a “powerful AR-15 type rifle” to carry out the attack, which he had been planning for “several weeks.”
“He dressed like a woman” to hide his identity and may have worn a long-haired wig to hide facial tattoos, he said. He then threw down his weapons and mingled with the people, who fled in terror.
The young man fired more than 70 shots and caused seven deaths and at least 35 injuries, according to a balance sheet released by police on Tuesday.
The dead couple included Irina and Kevin McCarthy, whose two-year-old son Aiden was rescued by locals who took him to safety.
A business
On Tuesday, the main street of this wealthy suburb was still blocked by police. It felt like time had stopped.
A pram, a tricycle, and a few folding chairs left on the spot testify to the chaos caused by the crowd’s flight after Monday’s shootings.
Dr. David Baum, a doctor involved in the rescue, witnessed the horror as the victims were “gutted” or riddled with bullets.

Also on Tuesday, police at Highland Park, north of Chicago in Lake County, said Crimo had been planning the shooting for weeks and that he had changed into women’s clothing to avoid suspicion during his escape.
The man was arrested hours after the attack, after a brief, uneventful chase.
Investigators confirmed that the suspect purchased the weapon at the time of the shooting, a high-caliber rifle, legally, and that he also had another firearm that he also legally purchased.
Krimo allegedly climbed onto a rooftop near the Independence Day parade and randomly fired more than 70 shots into the crowd.
