The Russians have a distinct advantage in the war against Ukraine, but the Kremlin faces growing challenges that will complicate efforts to consolidate its gains. Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin said this in an interview with Bloomberg.
“There is an opinion that the Russian Federation has advantages and all trump cards have some advantages, but it is not completely dominant and if it gets what it wants, it will be expensive in the future,” said the leader of the US Department of Defense.
He said it needs to be taken into account in any ceasefire that may be implemented by the new administration of President Donald Trump.
He believes that the Russian Federation “is also not without challenges.”
“They went to the DPRK, Iran to ask for help, weapons and ammunition, and now people,” the American official recalled.
The Kremlin faces growing challenges that will complicate efforts to consolidate its gains in Ukraine, he said.
Austin also commented on criticism of the current presidential administration, which has been accused of not having a clear strategy regarding Ukraine.
“What he did helped Ukraine survive, it helped defend its sovereign territory,” Austin said.
He added that Putin would not have lost Syria if not for the strategic success of the US in helping Ukraine. According to Austin, because Russian dictator Putin has put so much effort into Ukraine, he has not helped his ally dictator Bashar al-Assad.
The Pentagon chief believes that without access to a major naval base in Syria, Putin could lose his presence in African countries.
