Sheinbaum proposed calling the southern states of the United States “Mexican America”, remembering that they were once part of Mexico.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum reacted to newly elected US President Donald Trump’s idea to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the “American Gulf”. Sheinbaum responded by proposing to rename part of the United States “Mexican America,” Politico reported on Wednesday, January 8.
“Obviously, the Gulf of Mexico is a name recognized by the United Nations,” he said at the briefing.
Sheinbaum also showed on a 17th century historical map that Mexico once controlled parts of what is now the United States.
“Why don’t we call them ‘Mexican America’? Sounds nice, doesn’t it?”
In addition, Sheinbaum joked that Trump probably doesn’t know who the leader of Mexico is today, recalling the country’s former President Felipe Calderon and former Minister of Public Security Garcia Luna, who was sentenced to more than 38 years in a prison in the US for accepting bribes from drug cartels.
“He seems to have been told that Felipe Calderon and Garcia Luna still rule Mexico But the people do not rule Mexico,” he stressed.
Along with such a funny response to Trump, Sheinbaum said that he wants to improve relations with the new US President for the benefit of their countries.
Trump has previously said he intends to raise customs tariffs on goods from Mexico, Canada and China on his first day in the White House. He said the tariff would remain in place until drugs and all illegals “stop the onslaught.”
