The head of the government of Slovakia, Robert Fico, threatens to limit assistance to Ukrainians in this country due to a stop in gas transit from Russia.
According to the prime minister, for Slovakia the only way out of the situation is either the resumption of gas transit or compensation for the loss of “about 500 million euros of public finances.”
After the talks in Brussels, the Slovak Prime Minister plans to convene a coalition council, followed by a cabinet meeting at which the coalition partners will discuss appropriate measures.
On behalf of the party, I announce that we are ready to negotiate and agree in a coalition on the cessation of electricity supplies and a significant reduction in support for Ukrainian citizens located on the territory of the Slovak Republic,” Fico said.
He argues that “the unilateral decision of the Ukrainian president will have a significant negative impact on our common European efforts to keep pace with the rapidly developing countries of the world.” Fico called on EU leaders to “pay due attention to this unprecedented situation and give it urgency.”
He also confirmed that negotiations between Slovakia, Ukraine and the European Commission on this issue will take place on January 7 in Brussels.
