Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andriy Sibiga arrived in Damascus.
On Monday, December 30, the Ukrainian diplomat met with the de facto leader of Syria, Ahmed al-Sharaa. Details of the meeting remain unknown. This was reported by the Syrian state news agency SANA, as well as Reuters.
On December 23, President Vladimir Zelensky instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to establish contacts with representatives of the people of Syria after the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime. Subsequently, the Foreign Ministry announced that it had established the first contacts with the new Syrian authorities at the ministerial level.
Bashar al-Assad’s regime famously held power in Syria for 53 years and collapsed after a 12-day offensive by rebels led by the Islamist militant group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, or the Levant Liberation Organization, ended on December 8 in the capture of Damascus. Mohammed al-Bashir has become the new interim Prime Minister of Syria.
The dictator fled with his family to Russia and settled in Moscow – the aggressor country provided him with asylum.
Let us recall that on December 27, President Vladimir Zelensky said that Ukraine sent 500 tons of wheat flour to Syria as part of a humanitarian program. Over the next weeks, 33 thousand 250 families or 167 thousand people in Syria will receive Ukrainian flour.
