The plane crash at South Korea’s Muan International Airport killed 179 people, while two people survived.
According to the fire service, the dead included 85 women, 84 men and 10 others whose gender could not be determined. Rescuers removed two crew members from the ship; they are conscious and their lives are not in danger.
South Korea’s Transport Ministry said a preliminary assessment of communications records showed that Muan airport controllers warned the plane of a bird strike shortly before landing and gave the pilot permission to land in a different area. The pilot issued a distress signal shortly before the plane left the runway and overshot the buffer zone before crashing into a wall.
A Jeju Air passenger plane crashed while landing in the city of Muan, about 290 kilometers south of Seoul. The Transport Ministry said the plane, a 15-year-old Boeing 737-800, was returning from Bangkok and that the crash occurred at 9.03am.
