In Russia, the US Helsinki Commission (Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, US Helsinki Commission, CSCE) added to the list of “undesirable organizations” announced a ban on its activities in Russia. Radio Liberty reported this on Wednesday, December 25.
It is implied that Russians will be subject to criminal prosecution for aiding and abetting the organization.
The US Helsinki Commission (official Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe) was established in 1976. Its task is to monitor the countries’ implementation of the 1975 Helsinki Agreements on cooperation and respect for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of countries. The agreement was signed by the heads of 35 states. Among them are all the European states that existed at that time (including the USSR), except for Albania, as well as the USA and Canada.
The law on undesirable organizations has been in force in Russia since 2015. The work of structures entered by the authorities in the relevant register is prohibited in the country. Participation in the activities of an undesirable organization is punishable by a fine, and in the case of repeated episodes – up to four years in prison.
It was previously reported that the Main Directorate of the Russian Ministry of Justice appealed to the Moscow City Court with a request to liquidate the Moscow Helsinki Group (MHG) and ban its activities in Russia.
