Denali, an Athabaskan native name meaning “high”, was officially designated as the name of the summit in 1975 by the State of Alaska.
Newly elected US President Donald Trump has announced his intention to change the name of the country’s highest point, Mount Denali in Alaska. Trump wants to return it to its former name – McKinley, in honor of the 25th President of the United States. He said this on Tuesday, December 24, in a speech in Phoenix, Fox News reports.
“McKinley was a very good, maybe a great, president,” Trump said.
The mountain was renamed by former US President Barack Obama in 2015. He named it “Denali”. It must reflect the traditions of the native people of Alaska, because the word “Denali” was once used by representatives of local tribes. It means “tall” or “big”.
It is known that in 1896 the peak began to be called Mount McKinley in honor of President William McKinley, who had never been to Alaska.
“The name was officially recognized by the US government until Barack Obama changed it despite the objections of lawmakers in McKinley’s home state of Ohio. Now Trump wants to call it McKinley again,” the journalists pointed out .
McKinley, who served two terms as governor of Ohio before becoming president in 1897, led the nation to victory in the Spanish-American War and raised protective tariffs to support US industry.
Mount Denali (McKinley) is located in Denali National Park, its height is 6168 meters.
Trump has previously said that Mexico and Canada could join the United States instead of receiving subsidies.
Trump also threatened Panama with the removal of the Panama Canal if the country does not stop charging what he considers excessive fees.
