Congress must pass a full spending bill for fiscal year 2025 when it returns from recess.
United States President Joe Biden approved the country’s defense budget in the amount of $895 billion for the fiscal year of 2025. The document provides for the allocation of funds for the implementation of national security programs of the Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Energy, Department of State, Ministry of Interior and intelligence. This was reported on the White House website.
Politico clarified that of this amount, $850 billion will be allocated to the Department of Defense’s core budget and $33.5 billion will be allocated to nuclear weapons programs led by the Department of Energy.
The Senate Armed Services Committee approved an additional $25 billion for missile defense, shipbuilding and anti-drone technologies.
The new law also includes a provision initiated by Speaker Mike Johnson that would prohibit the military’s Tricare health care system from covering treatment for gender dysphoria. Biden criticized the provision in a statement outlining his objections to the bill.
Congress is expected to pass a full spending bill for fiscal year 2025 when it returns from recess early next year.
While it’s unclear how President-elect Donald Trump will approach defense spending, GOP hawks hope the new Republican majorities in both chambers will unlock more money for the military.
As you know, on Saturday night, in the last hours before a potential shutdown in the United States, the House of Representatives and the Senate approved a bill that continued funding in the absence of an adopted budget.
