Starting next year, the contract between Ukraine and the Russian Federation on the transfer of Russian gas to Europe through Ukrainian territory will expire. Hungary and Slovakia want the contract to be extended, but Kyiv is firmly against it.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said his visit to Moscow was a reaction to Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s words about gas transit in his country. Fico wrote this on Sunday, December 22, on the social network Facebook.
As Fico wrote on social networks, he allegedly warned European leaders about plans to go to Putin.
“My meeting today is a response to the statement of the President of Ukraine, who answered my personal question on Thursday, that he opposes any transfer of gas through Ukraine to our territory such a position he causes damage to finances in Slovakia,” said the prime minister.
He added that the Russian dictator, for his part, confirmed the readiness of the Russian Federation to continue supplying gas to Europe, although it will be impossible after January 1, 2025 due to the position of Ukraine.
“During a long conversation with Putin, we exchanged views on what is happening in Ukraine We exchanged views on the military situation in Ukraine, the possibility of a quick peaceful end to the war and relations between Slovakia and the Russian Federation,” Fico. wrote.
Slovakia criticized Prime Minister Robert Fico’s visit to Moscow to meet dictator Vladimir Putin, calling it a “betrayal” of the country’s allies and interests.
Fico threatened Ukraine with “measures” for stopping the transfer of gas from Russia to Europe next year.
