Nothing else compares to Article 5 of the NATO Charter on security guarantees, so Ukraine should have membership in the Alliance, Carpenter believes.
Ukraine’s membership in NATO may follow the cessation of hostilities on the territory of our country. Michael Carpenter, Director for Europe at the US National Security Council, said this on Sunday, December 22, in an interview broadcast on the telethon.
According to him, the highest guarantee of security for Ukraine is membership in the North Atlantic Alliance.
“Article 5 is the most reliable, safe form of guarantees that states can have and is very important for Ukraine,” the White House official emphasized.
He added that as the hot phase of the war continues in Ukraine, it will be difficult to achieve. And for our country to become part of NATO, a lot of political will will be needed from all 32 member countries of the Alliance.
At the same time, Carpenter supported the idea of a European military mission that would guarantee Ukraine that Russia would not go further if a peace agreement was signed.
“As I understand it, there are a number of European countries that will discuss this particular concept, therefore, in my opinion, the presence of some EU countries that will invest in the success of Ukraine and help stabilize the situation, ” said the officer.
Earlier, Ukrainians named the best security guarantees. At the same time, more than 70% of Ukrainians have a positive attitude to the idea of Ukraine’s gradual entry into NATO, as it happened with the divided Germany.
