The Spiritual Administration of Muslims of the Russian Federation allowed men to marry four times, contrary to the Family Code.
Russia’s Council of Theologians of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims (SDM) has allowed Russian Muslims to enter into up to four “religious marriages.” This was announced by the Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ulema and the Muslim Spiritual Directorate of the Russian Federation, Mufti of Moscow Ildar Alyautdinov in a conversation with RIA Novosti.
“It is allowed if the wife is unable to bear children due to her health, due to the end of her reproductive age or other objective reasons,” Alyautdinov explained.
The main condition for polygamy, according to the mufti, is that the husband treats all wives fairly and equally. It assumes equal financial support, provision of separate housing for each spouse and equal distribution of time between them. If a man cannot ensure the fulfillment of these conditions, he is prohibited from entering into a polygamous marriage.
The mufti also emphasized that a married man is obliged to inform his wife of his intention to enter into a new marriage.
In Russia, according to the Family Code, it is forbidden to marry someone who is in another registered marriage. In this regard, the Council of Ulema noted that the rights of women who are only in religious marriages are not protected by law. However, Russian law does not provide for liability for polygamy.
Let’s remember that at first the Supreme Mufti of Russia called the country a real “caliphate of God.”
