Dozens of Republican congressmen refused to vote for Trump’s proposed legislation.
The House of Representatives on Thursday, December 19, failed the government funding bill initiated by Donald Trump. If it is not adopted on Saturday, the country will enter a shutdown – a situation in which some government departments will stop working due to the lack of an approved budget, reports Reuters.
The agency said that in this way dozens of Republicans challenged the newly elected president.
“The vote exposed divisions within Trump’s Republican Party that could resurface next year when they control the White House and both houses of Congress,” the post said.
Lawmakers in Congress voted 174 to 235 to reject the spending package, which GOP leaders quickly did after Trump and billionaire Elon Musk broke an initial bipartisan deal.
The bill was not supported by the entire faction of the Democratic Party, as well as 38 congressmen from the Republican Party. Only three Republicans approved the document.
If the bill doesn’t pass Saturday, about two million federal workers will remain without pay.
It was previously reported that Republicans would retain control of the House of Representatives.
