Donald Trump met with the director of TikTok amid the fact that the US wants to ban the platform. FT reports this.
There is a reasonable possibility that the new administration will suspend enforcement of the law or otherwise attempt to mitigate its most serious potential consequences, TikTok said in a statement.
The law, which would ban TikTok if it is not sold, was passed this spring. It will come into force on January 19, 2025. Newly elected US President Donald Trump, who takes office on January 20, has promised to “save” the app, although during his first term he advocated banning it.
The Chinese owner of ByteDance has until January 19 to sell TikTok, otherwise the social network with its 170 million users in the States will simply be blocked.
In a recently lost lawsuit, TikTok and its Chinese parent company ByteDance tried to argue that the obligation to sell the US share of the app violated the Constitution. The court rejected their complaint. The law, which would ban TikTok if it is not sold, was passed this spring.
Trump has not indicated what mechanisms he would use to avoid a TikTok ban. Some experts note that the law allows TikTok to continue operating if the president determines that China no longer controls the platform. They assume that Trump will do just that, writes FT.
Meanwhile, the European Commission has launched an investigation against TikTok over the Romanian elections.
Under European law, TikTok must assess and mitigate systemic risks associated with election virtue. The regulator will check whether the social network has violated these standards and how its advertising and recommendation services work.
The duration of the investigation depends on the complexity of the case and TikTok’s cooperation with the European Commission.
Far-right pro-Russian politician Kelin Georgescu illegally used TikTok to promote his campaign and won the first round of the Romanian presidential election. But the court overturned their results, so the election process will be held again.
