Ukraine wants to sign an agreement on the acquisition of rare Ukrainian minerals with the new United States administration.
Ukrainian authorities twice delayed the conclusion of a mining cooperation agreement with the United States in order to finalize it with newly elected President Donald Trump after he officially took office. The New York Times reported this on Saturday, December 14, citing its own sources.
Ukraine plans to sign an agreement with the administration of the current US President Joe Biden on cooperation in the field of mining and processing of minerals.
But according to officials on both sides, Ukrainian authorities have twice delayed the signing, a sign that Kyiv may be waiting for Trump to take office.
The publication cited data from the Ukrainian private investment company Horizon Capital that Ukraine has deposits of 20 important minerals, such as cobalt and graphite, the reserves of which are estimated at $11.5 trillion.
The piece also noted that Ukraine holds a third of Europe’s proven lithium reserves, a key battery material that could be of interest to American billionaire Tesla CEO Elon Musk, a close Trump ally.
The NYT also notes that last month, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham talked about a “good deal” that would allow the US to return the money and enrich itself with rare earth minerals.
This agreement is one of the points of Zelensky’s Victory Plan, which Zelensky presented to both presidential candidates even before the US elections. It contains a proposal by the US and the EU to enter into a joint agreement to protect resources and exploit economic potential. It has been reported that this item has a secret application.
