Georgian opposition forces have called on the European Union to declare “the self-proclaimed Bidzina regime illegal.”
Georgia’s four largest opposition forces have appealed to the European Union with Georgian Dream candidate and former football player Mikheil Kavelashvili as the new president. This was stated in a joint appeal to the EU by Georgian political forces, Sova reports.
The letter is addressed to the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaya Kalas, and to the Foreign Ministers of the EU member states. It is signed Nika Melia (Coalition for Change), Tina Bokuchava (Unity – National Movement), Mamuka Khazaradze (Strong Georgia), Zaza Tavadze (Gakharia for Georgia).
Georgia’s opposition forces have called on the European Union to declare “the self-proclaimed regime of Bidzina (Ivanishvili, a Russian oligarch of Georgian origin – ed.) illegitimate” amid an unprecedented political crisis in the country.
Kavelashvili was one of the initiators of the law on “foreign agents” and often engaged in active anti-Western propaganda. Once elected by a self-proclaimed illegitimate parliament, it will no longer have independence or legitimacy, opposition forces warn.
The authors of the letter call for immediate action to support the Georgian people and protect European values:
-
the immediate and unconditional release of all imprisoned politicians, activists and peaceful demonstrators;
-
introducing targeted sanctions against those responsible for undermining democracy, especially against Bidzina Ivanishvili and his circle involved in political repression.
-
ending visa-free travel and limiting visa requirements for officials associated with the illegitimate Georgian Dream government;
-
declare illegitimate “the self-proclaimed regime of Bidzina Ivanishvili” in all relevant statements by the European Union.
-
Condemn violent actions against peaceful protesters, journalists and activists.
As you know, on Saturday, December 14, the Georgian electoral college elected Mikhail Kavelashvili as president.
