The American division of the Chinese social network must be sold before January 19, otherwise it will be blocked.
The US Federal Court of Appeal has upheld the deadline by which the US division of the social network TikTok must be sold. The Voice of America reported this on Saturday, December 14.
Lawyers for TikTok and its parent company ByteDance asked the court not to sell the service until the Supreme Court considers the legal challenge. However, the appeal deemed the request unfounded.
The law banning the TikTok social network in the United States was passed by Congress and signed by President Joe Biden in early 2024. The authors and supporters of the bill believe that the Chinese social network, which has achieved enormous popularity in the American market, may transfer personal data of Americans to the Chinese government, threatening the country’s national security.
TikTok said the sale of the division would not be approved by Chinese authorities. The company called the law a violation of the rights of 170 million Americans who use the service.
If the law is not repealed, the popular app will stop working until January 19th. Otherwise, the owners will face a fine of $850 billion. Companies that provide hosting or updating services to social networks (including Apple and Google) could be fined up to $85 billion each.
US President-elect Donald Trump promised to “save” the platform during his presidential campaign. However, his inauguration is scheduled for January 20 – if the law remains in effect, TikTok will be blocked in the United States within 24 hours.
The company reportedly challenged a document passed by Congress and signed by President Joe Biden that required it to sell TikTok. ByteDance lost a legal appeal and must sell the app. However, there is still one last hope – the Supreme Court.
