The state of emergency allows the government to respond quickly and limit energy exports.
On the night of December 13, the Parliament of Moldova voted to introduce a state of emergency in the country. It is valid for 60 days, starting December 16th. It was reported by Reuters.
It was noted that Moldova receives Russian gas through Ukraine, which does not intend to renew the current transit contract with Gazprom, which expires on December 31. This in turn poses a threat to the Moldovan country, because it is closely connected with Transnistria.
From 2022, Transnistria and the central government of Moldova have agreed that all Russian gas received by the Moldovan state will go to the unrecognized region.
With gas transit now in doubt, the government said denying gas supplies to Transnistria “would lead to a humanitarian crisis… as well as create risks for the stability of Moldova’s electricity sector.”
As you know, there is a power plant in Transnistria that runs on Russian gas. It is the most important pillar of the so-called region, and also provides most of the electricity for the areas directly controlled by Moldova.
Accordingly, both sides depend on each other. The state of emergency allows the government to respond quickly and limit energy exports. The country’s Prime Minister, Dorin Rechyan, called on the representatives to make such a decision.
According to him, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin “wants to leave the population of Transnistria without gas and electricity and hold them hostage.” According to him, Moscow is doing this to destabilize the situation in Moldova. Therefore, he called on the parliament to approve the emergency so that “this winter will be the last in the history of the country when we will experience energy blackmail.”
Recan noted that the issue of transit through Ukraine is an “artificial problem”, since Russian gas can be transported through other routes.
It was previously reported that Moldova is introducing a state of emergency in the country’s energy sector due to the crisis, which could lead to the cessation of electricity supplies and more.
Earlier, the Prime Minister of the country called on the citizens to be prepared for the increase in gas charges.
