The United States is unsure of Assad’s whereabouts but is monitoring reports that he is seeking refuge in Moscow.
Incumbent US President Joe Biden has announced that the United States has conducted airstrikes in Syria to prevent the Islamic State from regaining its position after the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government.
Speaking at the White House, Biden celebrated the fall of Assad as a “major act of justice” and expressed hope that after decades of repressive rule, the people of Syria will build a new, freer society. But he warned that this was also a “moment of risk and uncertainty” and that his administration would try to prevent terrorists from regaining their strength.
“We clearly understand the fact that ISIS will try to take advantage of any vacuum to restore its viability… We will not allow this to happen… Just today, US forces have carried out a dozen precision strikes, airstrikes , inside Syria, targeting ISIS camps and ISIS fighters,” Biden said.
The head of the White House also noted the actions of the United States and its allies, which weaken the supporters of Syria – Russia, Iran and Hezbollah. He said that “for the first time” they could no longer defend Assad’s rule.
“Our strategy has changed the balance of power in the Middle East,” Biden said.
He also noted that the United States will “remain vigilant” against the Syrian rebels.
“Make no mistake, some of the rebel groups that toppled Assad have their own dark histories of terrorism and human rights abuses,” he added.
Biden said the groups are “saying the right things right now.”
“But since they have a great responsibility, we will examine not only their words, but also their actions,” the president said.
The United States is unsure of Assad’s whereabouts but is monitoring reports that he is seeking asylum in Moscow.
Let’s recall that on the morning of December 8, rebel forces in Damascus declared the capital “free” from longtime leader Bashar al-Assad. They said government institutions would remain under the administration of the former prime minister until the formal transfer of power.
On Sunday afternoon, the Russian Foreign Ministry, an ally of the Syrian regime, issued a statement saying that Assad had left the presidency and Syria.
