The Turkish leader said his country does not claim Syrian territories. He wants Syria to find peace and tranquility as soon as possible.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan commented on the situation in Syria, saying that a new reality has emerged there. He said this on Saturday, December 7, in an interview with CNN.
“Everyone must recognize that a new reality has emerged in Syria, politically and diplomatically,” the Turkish leader said.
He said his country “wants neighboring Syria to find peace and tranquility after 13 years of civil war.”
“I want to say this openly: we do not intend to claim land that belongs to other countries. As Turkey, we want our neighbor Syria to quickly find the peace and tranquility that it has been striving for for 13 year,” Erdogan said.
He made his statement in the city of Gaziantela, located near the Syrian border. It is known that this locality is home to approximately half a million Syrian refugees who have been displaced by the war. Erdogan said “history will remember the hospitality of Gaziantel.”
“Our Syrian brothers have really lived through difficult times, they have paid a heavy price… It is estimated that almost one million Syrians have lost their lives because of the Syrian regime and terrorist groups,” he said.
Discussing the start of the rebel offensive, Erdogan said the following: “It seems that the increased attacks on civilians in Idlib was the straw that broke the camel’s back and triggered the latest events.”
We remind you that on Saturday it was reported that the rebels were already in the suburbs of the capital of Syria – Damascus, where they demolished the monument of Assad’s father.
In the past, the media reported that Assad may leave Damascus. He reportedly went to Tehran to negotiate with Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei.
