The bodies of two men were found in Romania, near the border with Ukraine.
According to the Romanian Border Police, a man died in the mountains after illegally crossing the border with Ukraine. His body was found 200 meters from the border; he had documents with him indicating that he was a citizen of Ukraine born in 1995.
The man, along with two other persons, illegally crossed the border in one of the mountain areas in the Ivano-Frankivsk region. He probably died from high blood pressure and hypothermia. An examination will determine the exact cause of death.
His companions turned to Romanian rescue services for help. The rescue operation was complex and lengthy: due to snow half a meter thick, fog, frost up to -11 degrees and difficult terrain. Two groups were involved in rescuing Ukrainian citizens, who climbed the mountain from different sides. Due to bad weather, aviation could not be used for a long time. The entire operation lasted about 22 hours.
In addition, Romanian border guards found the body of a man in the Tisza River with signs of prolonged exposure to the water. The identity of the deceased is currently being established.
Since the beginning of martial law in Ukraine, about 50 cases of death of men during illegal crossing of the state border have been recorded.
