This official pardon cannot be revoked by President-elect Donald Trump.
US President Joe Biden has announced that he has pardoned his son Hunter Biden, who was sentenced this month for gun trafficking and tax crimes. This was stated in a statement by the head of the White House on Sunday, December 1.
“I signed a pardon for my son Hunter. From the day I took office, I said I would not interfere with the decisions of the Department of Justice, and I kept my word, even as I watched my son selective and unfair prosecution,” the statement said.
President Biden noted that the prosecution of his son was certainly connected to their family ties and pressure from the political opponents of the head of state. In his opinion, the trial was contaminated by crude politics and therefore there was a miscarriage of justice.
“I hope the American people understand why the father and the president came to this decision,” Joe Biden said.
The pardon means Hunter Biden will not be convicted of his crimes, eliminating any chance of him being sent to prison, which is a possibility.
In June, a jury found Hunter Biden guilty of illegally purchasing and possessing a firearm after a lengthy trial that involved drug abuse and family problems.
In September, he pleaded guilty to nine tax offenses related to $1.4 million in taxes he failed to pay by spending it on escorts, strippers, cars and drugs.
