A law has gone into effect in Belgium giving Belgian sex workers the right to sign formal employment contracts, as well as to receive various social benefits, the Guardian and Associated Press wrote.
“In general, the law establishes rules on working hours, wages and safety measures, eliminating the gap in the legal protection of industrial workers,” the journalists pointed out.
By law, Belgian sex workers now have the right to refuse clients and stop certain activities at any time.
Also, workers in the sector will have access to health insurance, paid vacations, maternity benefits, unemployment benefits and pensions.
Employers are required to provide sex workers with panic buttons, clean linens, showers and condoms on their premises.
The protection does not apply to those who work from home or to activities such as striptease or pornography.
