The word of the year was chosen by experts at Oxford University Press taking into account the results of online voting on the publisher’s website.
The Oxford English Dictionary chose brain rot as its word of the year. It is excessive consumption of pointless content that harms a person. It was announced on Monday, December 2, by the press service of the university publishing house Oxford University Press.
Brain rot literally translates as “brain decay.” This is the name given to the result of excessive consumption of information, especially online content that has no significant value and negatively affects a person’s cognitive abilities.
“The frequency of use of the expression increased by 230% throughout the year,” the press service notes.
The first mention of brain rot was found in the book “Walden, or Life in the Woods” by the American poet Henry David Thoreau, published in 1854.
In the digital age, the phrase “brain decay” has become popular on social media.
In 2023, the Oxford Dictionary’s word of the year is the noun rizz, which means “style, beauty, or charm.”
