Trump weighs options to stop war – media

The newly elected president’s team is considering several options to bring Russia and Ukraine to the negotiating table. But it’s “too early” to tell what Trump’s strategy will be.

The National Security Advisor to the newly elected US President, Mike Volz, has been considering several proposals to end the war in Ukraine in recent days. Among them was an offer from General Keith Kellogg, whom Trump announced as his candidate for the post of special representative for Ukraine. CNN reported this on Wednesday, November 27, citing two sources.

It noted that while work continues on the specific details of the strategy, Trump administration officials are likely to “push for an early ceasefire to temporarily freeze the conflict while both sides negotiate.”

It is also expected that the administration appointed by the US president will push for European and NATO allies to bear most of the “cost burden” of supporting Ukraine.

“We need to bring this to a responsible conclusion. We need to restore restraint, restore peace and get ahead of this escalation, not react to it,” Mike Walz said in a recent Fox interview.

It was noted that the options for ending the war considered by Volz included Keith Kellogg’s proposal, which stipulates that the continuation of American military assistance to Ukraine depends on Kyiv’s participation in peace negotiations with Russia and ” official US policy aimed at a ceasefire and a negotiated resolution of the conflict in Ukraine.” At the same time, Ukraine’s aspirations to join NATO, according to this plan, will be “postponed” for a long time to force Russia to the negotiating table.

Another idea currently being discussed is that the Russian Federation would retain control over occupied Ukrainian territory, and that Ukraine would accept NATO membership. At the same time, Trump’s entourage does not seem to have many supporters of Ukraine joining the Alliance in the near future.

However, CNN’s interlocutors emphasize that it is still “too early” to discuss what the Trump team’s strategy will be to end the war in Ukraine. The Republican himself is constantly changing his position and messaging tactics, especially when it comes to foreign policy. So the planning process for Ukraine is likely to be “unstable,” one of the sources noted.

“Trump allies appointed to top national security positions have publicly stated that the president-elect is considering a range of options to bring Russia and Ukraine to the negotiating table, including some which contradicts his previously expressed views on the conflict,” journalists emphasize. .

In particular, Sebastian Gorka, who was chosen by Trump as one of Volz’s top representatives, recently called Russian dictator Vladimir Putin a “thug.” He added that the new administration could increase military aid to Ukraine to achieve a quick end to the war.

“I will give a hint that the president mentioned: he will tell this killer, the former colonel of the KGB, the leader who runs the Russian Federation: ‘You will negotiate now, or the help that we have given to Ukraine until now will look nuts.’ This is how he will force the gentlemen to come to an agreement to stop the bloodshed,” said Gorka.

At the same time, Trump officials are suggesting the president-elect would want to take a similarly tough stance on Ukraine and could threaten to withhold aid if they don’t come to the table, according to a source familiar with the ongoing discussions. about the end of the war.

Recall that on Wednesday, Trump appointed retired General Keith Kellogg to serve as his special envoy to resolve Russia’s war against Ukraine.
