Russia could invade the Norwegian Arctic island of Spitsbergen or use “little green man” tactics in the Baltic states under the guise of protecting Russian minorities.
The head of Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service, Bruno Kahl, said that Russia is preparing for a war with Western countries, which could take place in the coming years. Kahl expressed this opinion at an event organized by the German Council on Foreign Relations in Berlin, Zeit reports on Wednesday, November 27.
“Russia is preparing for war with the West. Military confrontation is becoming an option for the Kremlin,” Kahl said.
He suggests that the Russian military will be able to “make an attack on the West” by the end of the decade. At the same time, the head of German intelligence noted that a large-scale attack on European NATO countries should not be expected.
Kahl believes that Moscow could use an attack on the Norwegian Arctic island of Spitsbergen or use “little green man” tactics in the Baltic states under the guise of protecting Russian minorities.
According to the head of German intelligence, such operations should cross the collective security obligations under Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty and fall within NATO.
According to German intelligence, the Russian leadership doubts “whether the obligation to provide assistance under Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty in emergency situations will remain in force.”
“There are no signs yet of specific Russian intentions regarding war but if such views prevail in the headquarters of the Russian government, the risk of military conflict will increase in the coming years,” he stressed.
Before a possible war begins, Russia will try to split NATO, Kahl said. This could happen, for example, if the Kremlin wins over individual countries that are members of the North Atlantic Alliance. Russian dictator Vladimir Putin will “test the West’s red lines and deepen escalation.”
Let’s recall that the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, appealed to members of the European Parliament to increase defense spending to the level of Russia. EU countries collectively spend 1.9% of their GDP on defense, while Russia spends up to 9%. “Something’s wrong here,” he said.
