The French president strongly criticized Haiti’s transition council for removing the prime minister.
French President Emmanuel Macron called the Haitian leaders who sacked the prime minister “idiots”. After this, a scandal arose between the countries. The Guardian reported this on Friday, November 22.
The Haitian government is understood to have summoned the French ambassador to the country to protest Macron’s “unfriendly and inappropriate” comments.
On Wednesday, the French president called the decision by Haiti’s transitional presidential council to remove the prime minister “completely stupid.” This decision was made in early November against the backdrop of escalating gang violence.
“Actually, Haitians killed Haiti by allowing drug trafficking,” Macron said.
Following these statements in Brazil, the French president praised former Haitian Prime Minister Harry Conil, who was removed from power due to disagreements in the council. Macron called him a great leader.
“They are complete idiots, they should not have fired him,” said the French leader.
These remarks by Macron caused outrage in Haiti (a former French colony). But on Thursday in Chile, the president seemed to soften his tone.
“France will never turn away from a crisis… There will never be double standards in the face of a tragedy, be it in Haiti or Venezuela, or at the gates of Europe,” Macron stressed.
The publication explained that Haiti’s leadership has been torn by internal strife, and three members of the transitional presidential council, tasked with restoring security and preparing the ground for elections, have been accused of corruption. They remained at their posts.
The Guardian also added that France has pledged €4 million to a UN fund to finance a desperately needed security mission to help restore security in Haiti, as well as funding French and Creole language courses for to its troops.
Additionally, the Haitian Foreign Ministry reported that during the meeting, French Ambassador Antoine Michon promised that France would remain on Haiti’s side to help restore security and hold elections.
It was previously reported that bandits shot down a passenger plane in Haiti.
In Haiti, an armed gang killed 70 people, including women and children.
