If elected, Richard Grenell will play a key role in Trump’s efforts to stop the war in Ukraine.
US President-elect Donald Trump is considering appointing his former intelligence chief, Richard Grenell, as special envoy for the “Russian-Ukrainian conflict.” Reuters reported this on Friday, November 22, citing four sources of knowledge.
It was noted that Grenell, who served as Trump’s ambassador to Germany and served as director of national intelligence during the president’s 2017-2021 term, if appointed to this post, would play a key role in Trump’s efforts to stop the war
The agency recalls that although the position of a special representative dedicated solely to solving the “Russian-Ukrainian conflict” does not currently exist, Trump is considering the possibility of creating one.
At the same time, according to interlocutors who spoke on the condition of anonymity, Trump may decide not to create a special representative on the “conflict in Ukraine,” although he is seriously considering this possibility. If he does, he may choose someone else for this role, as there are no guarantees that Grenell will agree.
Reuters said some of Grenell’s views could give Ukrainian leaders pause.
So, at a Bloomberg roundtable in July, he advocated the creation of “autonomous zones” as a way to resolve the “conflict.”
He also suggested he would not support Ukraine joining NATO in the near future, a position shared by many of Trump’s allies.
Admirers of Grenell note that he has a long diplomatic career and a deep understanding of European affairs. In addition to serving as ambassador to Germany, Grenell also served as the president’s special envoy for peace talks in Serbia and Kosovo.
Grenell is also the main contender for the position of Secretary of State.
It was noted that if appointed, Grenell would be another openly gay member of the new US government. Trump previously announced that he wanted Scott Bessent, who is also openly gay, as his Treasury Secretary.
Earlier, The New York Times reported, citing sources, that Boris Epstein offered Trump his candidacy for the post of special envoy for peace negotiations in Ukraine, despite his lack of foreign policy experience.
Before this, it was reported that Trump will soon appoint a special representative for peace issues in Ukraine. He should lead the negotiations with Russia to end the war.
