The Security Service and the National Police neutralized an FSB intelligence group in Odessa. It included three local residents who were supposed to carry out explosions and were exposed in different regions of Ukraine.
In the near future, they were preparing to detonate an improvised explosive device with numerous casualties in southern Ukraine.
According to the case materials, the defendants managed to carry out one explosion in Kyiv, after which the attackers were detained without delay.
In mid-November of this year, a 17-year-old member of an enemy cell arrived in Kyiv, where he planted explosives near the building of one of the government agencies of Ukraine. The explosive device was filled with nails and screws, and was activated by a remote control module.
After the explosion, the SBU documented the attacker’s actions step by step in order to identify his accomplices and expose the entire network. The defendant hid in rented apartments in the capital, and subsequently returned to Odessa by train to commit new terrorist attacks.
Employees of the SBU and the National Police caught the fuse red-handed when he acquired chemical components and striking elements to make another explosive.
In addition, during the special operation, his accomplices were detained – two residents of Odessa, aged 15 and 20, who burned down a Ukrposhta branch in the port cities of Odessa and Nikolaev.
As the investigation established, all three defendants were remotely “closed” to one Russian curator, whose field of view they came to in Telegram channels in search of easy “earnings.”
The agents developed and “agreed” with him on plans for terrorist attacks, and also, according to his instructions, produced flammable substances and explosive devices.
SBU and National Police investigators informed the detainees of suspicion (in accordance with the crimes committed) under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:
- Part 1 Art. 258 (terrorist act);
- Part 2 Art. 194 (intentional destruction or damage to property committed by arson, explosion or other generally dangerous method).
Two defendants are in custody. The issue of bringing a minor member of an enemy group to justice is being resolved. The perpetrators face up to 10 years in prison with confiscation of property.
