In Istanbul, unknown assailants attacked police with improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and Molotov cocktails. Turkish television channel NTV reported this on Saturday, November 16.
The report said the police were dispatched to an area where a crime had occurred involving a group of people walking the streets with Molotov cocktails and improvised explosive devices in their hands.
When law enforcement officials arrived, unknown assailants threw stones at a police vehicle and fled.
As the TV channel clarified, “the car had minor damage, but a group of experts was called to the scene and discovered unexploded improvised explosive devices.”
The police have launched an operation to catch the attackers, and a police helicopter is circling the skies above the area. Due to the situation, local residents are urged to stay indoors and avoid going out. Some parts of the area were also closed for security and investigation purposes.
There is no confirmed information on the number of casualties or deaths as a result of the attack. According to preliminary data, representatives of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) may be behind the attack.
