EU High Representative for External Affairs Josep Borrell briefed member states on intelligence findings on arms transfers from Russia to China.
The European Union is discussing possible sanctions against China over evidence that it has provided Russia with weapons for use in a full-scale war against Ukraine. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung writes about this with reference to sources.
It was learned that the EU’s High Representative for External Affairs, Josep Borrell, informed member states of intelligence findings on arms supplies from China to Russia.
In a briefing for reporters on November 15, he said the evidence was compelling and supported “the provision of lethal weapons.”
In September, the media reported Western intelligence indicating secret arms deliveries to Russia from China. And Reuters writes that Russia has developed a weapons program with China to develop and manufacture long-range attack drones.
“Now we have to look at all the tools,” the official said, adding that the EU could expand the list of sanctions to ban doing business with Chinese companies, as well as owning assets and entering EU.
According to another FAZ interlocutor, the EU’s reaction will depend on China’s reaction to the evidence presented to it.
Let’s recall that in October the US Department of the Treasury imposed sanctions against a network of companies from China and Russia involved in the development and production of long-range Harpy drones used by the Russian Federation in the war against Ukraine.
Earlier, the State Department said China was giving Russia “very significant” help to boost the Kremlin’s military machine in exchange for secret Russian military technology for submarines and missiles.
