Nuclear energy does not emit “greenhouse gases” that are harmful to the climate, but at the same time it is a source of radioactive waste.
The European Parliament (EP) has given way for recognition of investment in natural gas and nuclear energy as sustainable, subject to certain conditions.
At the EP meeting on Wednesday, July 6, only 278 of the 639 MPs present voted to block such a decision, 328 opposed and 33 abstained. A majority of 353 out of 705 votes are needed to get a parliamentary veto.
Today, blocking the recognition of gas and nuclear energy as “green” is only possible if at least 20 of the 27 EU countries exercise the right to veto. Experts consider this option highly unlikely. This means that the taxonomy – a list of technologies that investors will have the right to market as “green” – could take effect in early 2023.
Controversial energy types
France is a leading force advancing the recognition of nuclear energy as environmental. Nuclear energy does not emit “greenhouse gases” that are harmful to the climate, but at the same time it is a source of radioactive waste. For their part, some EU countries, including Poland, consider gas to be a lesser evil for the environment than coal.
In the EU, less controversial taxonomy rules have been implemented this year, including electric vehicles and building renovations.
Recall that the Ministry of Energy reported that nine new nuclear power units will be built in Ukraine.
The first to be built are two units in the Khmelnitsky NPP with a total capacity of 2 GW. The expected investment in this project is $ 14 billion.
