In the Ternopil region, four ophthalmologists will be tried, because of whose actions 18 patients were partially or completely blind.
Prosecutors of the Ternopil Regional Prosecutor’s Office sent to court indictments in criminal proceedings against three doctors and the head of the ophthalmology department of the district hospital, the Office of the Prosecutor General reported on November 4.
Depending on the actions committed, they were charged with improper performance of professional duties, resulting in grave consequences for patients, obtaining unlawful benefits and official negligence (part 1 of article 140, part 4 of article 368-4, part 2 of article 367 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine) .
The investigation established that the head of the ophthalmology department of one of the regional hospitals sold to patients a drug prohibited for use in Ukraine, which was not intended for treatment in ophthalmological practice.
Three doctors at this medical institution, from March 2022 to February 2023, on the instructions of the head of the department, administered the prohibited drug to patients. Each of them unlawfully received from 8 to 34 thousand UAH from patients, demanding this money for administering the drug.
As a result of this “treatment”, 18 patients suffered, 15 of them lost vision in one eye, 3 – in both eyes. Due to complications of the disease after administration of the drug, seven patients underwent surgery to remove the eye.
