Part of the ruling party in Germany is returning to the traditional course of rapprochement with Russia.
The deputy editor-in-chief of BILD writes about this in his column.
The Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) heads the coalition currently ruling in Germany. Back in the 1970s, this party pursued a policy of rapprochement with Moscow. After the collapse of the USSR, Social Democrat Gerhard Schröder, a personal friend of Vladimir Putin, became one of the Chancellors of the Federal Republic of Germany. After February 24, 2022, the SPD leadership admitted mistakes regarding Russia, distanced itself from Moscow and supported Ukraine.
But now Schröder’s associate Matthias Mirsch has become the new secretary general of the party. In the eastern states of Germany, the Social Democrats are discussing a coalition with the pro-Russian Sarah Wagenknecht Union (BSW). Deputy editor-in-chief of BILD Paul Ronzheimer considers this to be links in one chain and speaks of the return of the “old Putin SPD”, loyal to Moscow.
The SPD has some who actually did it [порвав із Кремлем]. For example, [співголова партії] Lars Klingbeil. I think it has really changed in recent years. But now, after Mirsch’s statements, he had to clarify where his position is and where the position of the SPD is. And this further shows that this update is far from complete. If they really wanted to change… Two years ago was what Klingbeil and others said. And now, 2.5 years later, we hear this from their Secretary General. For me, this is an indicator that in part of the party this update did not lead to anything. There they again tell the same thing as several years ago. I think the next step will be to say that we need Schröder to negotiate with Putin. He has such contacts, they cannot be burned. And this is the first step towards rapprochement. Gerhard Schröder, whether he was in his favorite Italian restaurant in Hanover or St. Petersburg, I don’t know where he is now. So he will order his favorite wine and say: “Now it only takes time for my comrades to finally understand: what I did was right.” That he seemed to be on the right side. And Vladimir Putin will die of laughter. We know that he follows German media closely, he speaks German, he reads German media every day. And he understands exactly what is happening in this party and in others. If we count the BSW, AfD and SPD together, we get an absolute majority. If only we take Mirsch’s words seriously. And they will spread further from parties that again seek rapprochement with Russia,” Ronzheimer said.
