Elon Musk was summoned to court in a case involving the distribution of money to American voters.
Previously, Musk announced that he would give a million dollars a day to a random registered voter who signed a petition from his organization America PAC.
The hearing concerns Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner’s attempt to stop Musk’s handout of money less than a week before the vote, amid a bitter race between Republican ex-President Donald Trump and Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris.
In the United States, a lawsuit was filed to stop such distribution of money to voters from Musk’s organization, writes the Washington Post. Previously, the Ministry of Justice had already warned that such a competition could be illegal, because the law prohibits payments with the intention of inducing people to vote or register.
Elon Musk strongly supports Trump’s election campaign.
Musk owns electric car maker Tesla and social media platform X, as well as space company SpaceX, which has numerous contracts with the US government and does work for the Department of Defense and NASA.
Some of this work is so sensitive that the United States has given Musk high-level security access, raising concerns among some that top-secret US information and capabilities could be at risk.
According to current and former US, European and Russian officials speaking to the Wall Street Journal, such fears may be justified.
