The Finnish prosecutor’s office has brought formal charges against one of the leaders of the Russian neo-Nazi group “Rusich”, Vojislav Torden (Jan Petrovsky).
He is accused of five war crimes committed in Ukraine in 2014-2015 in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions. In particular, in the killing of 22 Ukrainian servicemen and the serious injury of four more.
Petrovsky was detained in July 2023 at an airport in Finland. He lived in the country under the new name Vojislav Torden.
Earlier, the Supreme Court of Finland refused to extradite a Russian criminal to Ukraine. At the same time, he continued to be in custody, and Finnish law enforcement officers will be investigating his war crimes.
The reason for this decision was allegedly poor conditions in Ukrainian prisons. The court considered that Petrovsky would be at risk of behavior that would degrade his dignity. Also, conditions in Ukrainian prisons allegedly worsened during the war.
Yan Petrovsky was arrested in Finland in July 2023, and the following month Ukraine turned to Finland with a request to extradite him. Petrovsky is accused of participating in terrorist crimes in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions in 2014-2015. He repeatedly called for the killing of Ukrainian children and emphasized his neo-Nazi ideas.
