The DPRK military contingent of up to 12 thousand people is undergoing training at five training sites in the Eastern Military District of the Russian Armed Forces.
The deployment of North Korean troops to support Russia’s war against Ukraine is a gross violation of international law, including the UN Charter. This was stated by the Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN Sergei Kislitsa at a meeting of the UN Security Council.
He emphasized that the provision or receipt by the DPRK military, under sanctions, of any training or other assistance related to the use of weapons, including ballistic missiles, is also a violation of Security resolutions Council.
According to available information, Kislitsa said, the DPRK military contingent of up to 12 thousand people is undergoing training at five training grounds in the Eastern Military District of the Russian Armed Forces. The contingent includes at least 500 officers from North Korea, including three generals on the general staff.
The Permanent Representative named their positions and names: Deputy Chief of the General Staff for Special Operations, Colonel General Kim Yong Bok; Deputy Chief of the General Staff – Chief of the Intelligence Department Lee Chang Ho; Chief of the Main Operations Directorate, Major General Shin Ham Chol.
According to the Ukrainian diplomat, it was subsequently planned to form at least five units or formations from North Korean military personnel, each numbering 2,000 to 3,000 troops. One such unit is equivalent to a motorized rifle regiment.
It is assumed that North Korean military personnel will wear Russian uniforms and be issued with Russian identity documents.
According to Kislitsa, in order to hide the presence of North Korean military personnel, they will be included in Russian units staffed by representatives of ethnic minorities from the Asian part of the Russian Federation. Among them, for example, is the “special Buryat battalion” of the 11th separate air assault brigade of the Airborne Forces of the Russian Armed Forces.
It was also known, the Ukrainian diplomat said, that from October 23 to October 28, at least seven planes transported up to 2,100 military personnel from the Eastern Military District to the Russian border with Ukraine.
The number of North Korean soldiers expected to be deployed from Russia’s Primorsky Krai by the end of October could reach 4,500. Already in November they will clearly begin direct participation in hostilities against the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Meanwhile, the Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation, Vasily Nebenzya, called the statements about the transfer of North Korean troops to Russia “false information.” According to him, with such statements the West is trying to “justify its own decision to send NATO troops” to Ukraine.
