The German Ambassador in Tehran expressed a strong protest and made a demarche on the execution of the German-Iranian political scientist Jamshid Sharmakhd.
German Foreign Ministry spokesman Sebastian Fischer announced on October 30 that official Berlin was summoning its ambassador to Iran, Markus Potzel, “for consultations.” The press service of the department reported this the day before, on October 29.
Potzel delivered a strong protest to the Iranian Foreign Minister and made the demarche to execute the German-Iranian political scientist Jamshid Sharmakhd after several years in prison.
On the same day, the Iranian Charge d’Affaires was summoned to the German Foreign Ministry, where they expressed “strong protest” against the actions of the Iranian regime.
“The Foreign Ministry reserves the right to take further measures,” the spokesman said.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz called the execution a “scandal”.
“Jamshid Sharmakhd was not even given a chance to defend himself against the allegations against him in court,” he said.
The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Annalena Bärbock, called the execution an assassination and recalled that “Tehran was repeatedly warned that the execution of a German citizen would have serious consequences.”
EU chief diplomat Josep Borrell also commented on the execution, expressing condolences to the family and noting that the European Union would consider retaliatory measures.
Sharmahd was born in Tehran, spent his childhood in Germany, and lived most of his life in the United States. The man was abducted under mysterious circumstances and taken to Iran on a trip to Dubai, after which he was charged with terrorism.
He was sentenced to death in 2023 following a verdict by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Court for his involvement in the 2008 Shiragh mosque attack that killed 14 people.
Let’s remember that earlier in Iran, the famous rapper Toumaj Salehi was sentenced to death on charges of supporting mass protests against the government.
In January, Iran executed four men accused of planning sabotage at a defense plant and possible links to the Israeli Mossad.
