UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres will travel to Russia for the BRICS summit.
Deputy Representative of the UN Secretary General Farhan Gak assures that Guterres’ trip to Kazan for a meeting of BRICS leaders is “standard practice”, and his position on the Russian war against Ukraine remains unchanged.
Gak added that “this meeting is of great importance for the UN’s work with the BRICS countries, representing about half of the world’s population,” and the secretary general will take the opportunity to hold a number of bilateral meetings with the leaders who will take part in the summit.
As for the meeting with Putin, the Secretary General will confirm his well-known position in relation to the war in Ukraine and the conditions for a just peace based on the UN Charter, international law and UN resolutions, the deputy head noted.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has already responded to the UN Secretary General’s plans to visit Russia and criticized them.
The UN Secretary General rejected Ukraine’s invitation to the first global peace summit in Switzerland. He, however, accepted an invitation to Kazan from the war criminal Putin. This is a wrong choice and not conducive to the cause of peace. This only harms the reputation of the UN, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said in a message on the social network X.
BRICS (English BRICS), until 2010 BRIC (BRIC) (from the English Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa – “Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa”) is an international organization of the largest in terms of area and population developing countries.
This group has evolved into a geopolitical bloc, with governments meeting annually at formal summits and coordinating multilateral policies since 2009—talking about confrontation with the West. Bilateral relations between the BRICS countries are conducted declaratively on the basis of non-interference, equality and mutual benefit. Founding countries Brazil, Russia, India and China held the first summit in Yekaterinburg in 2009, with South Africa joining the bloc a year later.
