The creation of a new NATO Command in Wiesbaden will allow for maximum efficiency in the allies’ efforts to supply military equipment to Ukraine.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that the new NATO command, created in the German city of Wiesbaden by the decision of the NATO Washington Summit, will have full operational capability before the end of the year, but at this time the Alliance is will work to avoid any delay in the supply of weapons to Ukraine or in organizing training for Ukrainian military personnel. He said this on October 22 in Tallinn at a joint press conference with Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal, Ukrinform reports.
“We are working hard to fulfill the commitments made at the Washington Summit in July, including the creation of a new Command to coordinate aid and training for Ukraine, as well as our financial contribution of at least 40 billion euro in 2024.. NSATU (NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine) will be fully operational by the end of the year.
He added that the creation of a new NATO Command in Wiesbaden would allow for maximum efficiency in the allies’ efforts to supply military equipment to Ukraine and organize training for its military.
“The most important thing is during this (opening of the NATO Command in Wiesbaden– ed..) will not fully take place, there should be no interruption in the delivery of weapons or training for Ukraine, we cannot afford it. According to the decision in Washington, we must do everything to ensure that Ukraine is fully integrated into NATO,” Rutte emphasized.
According to him, the allies have made significant progress in fulfilling their financial obligations to Ukraine. In the first half of the year, they provided Ukraine with about 21 billion euros worth of weapons and military equipment, a step towards the specific funding of 40 billion euros per year. According to Rutte, it is clear that the need for such assistance is greater, but the NATO allies continue, step by step, to move towards their goal.
“It is important for us to have the necessary capabilities to respond to the challenges we face. Here in Estonia, you know how close some of these challenges are. My first official visit as Secretary General was to Kyiv, where I met with President Zelensky We confirmed our firm commitments to Ukraine, “said the Secretary General of NATO.
Rutte said that Estonia is one of the countries that support Ukraine the most. Estonia has already provided more than €500 million in aid to Ukraine from 2022, and has pledged to support Ukraine with funding equal to 0.25 percent of the country’s GDP in the coming years.
“Today we discussed how to increase our aid to Ukraine now, before a difficult winter, and also for the long term. Russia continues to attack Ukraine’s critical energy infrastructure, and as winter approaches, the our support for Ukraine remains critical,” – said the Secretary General of NATO.
Let’s remember that last summer they started to create a NATO center in Germany to coordinate military aid to Ukraine. The Alliance headquarters is expected to consist of 330 military personnel. Until he started his work.
