The first cases of infection with a new type of bluetongue virus, for which there are no vaccines, have been recorded in the Netherlands. NU.nl reported this on Tuesday, October 15.
It was noted that the virus was found in a sheep, as well as in a cow and its calf on two different farms in the Dutch province of Utrecht.
“No vaccine for this virus variant has not been found before in the Netherlands, but is common in other countries outside of Europe,” the publication said.
Bluetongue virus is an infectious disease of a viral nature that can be recognized, among other things, by the blue color of the tongue. Only ruminant animals are sensitive, so mainly cattle, sheep and goats are affected. It is transmitted through the bites of certain types of midges.
There is no risk of infecting people with the virus. Meat and milk from infected animals can be eaten without restrictions. Other products made from them are also harmless to humans and suitable for consumption.
