The EU wants to approve a new 10-point plan to combat illegal migration.
The purpose of the new rules is to speed up the return of migrants to their countries of origin. Yes, outside the European Union they are proposing to create centers for migrants who have been denied asylum in the EU.
And in order to prevent hybrid threats from Russia and Belarus, the EU will consider a stricter visa policy and restriction of air traffic with Minsk. At the same time, the European Union has not yet announced changes that would affect Ukrainians abroad.
On October 12, Poland said it wanted to temporarily stop providing asylum to illegal migrants, including from Belarus. The European Commission warned Poland against such changes, arguing that the country could violate human rights.
The Politico report says it is not yet clear which parts of the Polish border the restrictions announced by Warsaw will apply to or how they will comply with international humanitarian law.
A temporary suspension of asylum applications was introduced in Finland in May. This is a response to the hybrid war declared on the entire EU (including primarily Poland) by the regimes in Moscow and Minsk, which consists of organizing mass transfers of people across our borders,” wrote Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on X-platform.
As he noted, “the right to asylum is used instrumentally in this war and has nothing to do with human rights.”
According to RMF, the EU plan contains 10 points. In it, the President of the European Commission said that it is necessary to consider the possibility of organizing centers outside the EU for migrants who do not have the right to asylum.
The material says that this is the first time that the European Commission has welcomed a proposal supported, in particular, by Poland. Italy is already organizing similar centers in Albania.
Von der Leyen also announced new rules that will make it more efficient to return migrants ineligible for asylum to their countries of origin. She indicated that one of the first tasks of the Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration is to solve the problem of hybrid attacks from Russia and Belarus. This includes, for example, agreements with airlines flying to Minsk and stricter visa policies.
There will also be new rules governing the long-term stay of refugees from Ukraine. However, there are no details on this innovation yet.
Migration will be one of the main topics at the two-day summit of EU heads of state and government in Brussels, which starts on October 17.
