The reason was Trudeau’s statement about the connection of Indian agents to the killing in Canada of one of the leaders of the Sikh freedom movement.
Canada and India escalated their dispute over last year’s killing of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The countries expelled six diplomats from each country. The Associated Press reported it on Monday, October 14.
Canada expels six Indian diplomats. Among them is the High Commissioner.
India’s foreign ministry later said it had also expelled six Canadian diplomats and said India was recalling its diplomats.
Relations between Delhi and Ottawa cooled and became tense following Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s announcement that intelligence linked Indian agents to Nijjar’s murder.
In a statement, India’s Ministry of External Affairs said the allegations in Canada stemmed from the work of Sikh agents. The Indian Foreign Ministry warned Canada of retaliatory actions from Delhi.
Hardeep Singh Nijjar was killed on June 18, 2023 near a temple in Vancouver. Nijjar was one of the Canadian leaders of the independence movement for Sikhs living in India. However, the Indian government considers him a terrorist and accuses him of leading a separatist group.
Recall that the dispute between Canada and India began last year, when Canada publicly accused the Indian government of possible involvement in the murder. In May of this year, another round of this scandal took place after three Indian citizens were detained in Canada, possibly involved in the murder.
