Qatar, a mediator on the issue since July 2023, has helped repatriate Ukrainian children trafficked to Russia and Russian-occupied Ukrainian territory since the invasion began in February 2022.
Qatar has announced an agreement with Kiev and Moscow to exchange custody of thirteen children deported by Russia to its territory. The French newspaper Le Figaro reported this on Thursday, September 26.
“Nine minors, aged 12 to 17, and one adult will be reunited with their families in Ukraine,” a Qatari official told reporters.
He clarified that four minors, who range from 2 to 7 years old, will be reunited with their families in Russia.
The agency’s spokesperson said that all will be met at the Qatari Embassy in Moscow before being reunited with their families.
Qatar, as a mediator on the issue of child exchange, has since July 2023 helped repatriate Ukrainian children illegally brought to its territory by Russia since the beginning of the invasion in February 2022.
Ukraine estimates that 20,000 Ukrainian children have been “deported or forcibly transferred” to Russia, although the total number may be higher as this figure only concerns officially identified children. According to Kyiv, about 400 of them have now been returned.
We remind you that 12 children have recently returned from the temporarily occupied Kherson region. It was also reported that a 16-year-old boy was returned to Ukraine, that his aunt took him to the Russian Federation and against his will gave him Russian citizenship.
